Dream holiday for ill mum
Sarah Colledge, who was diagnosed with cancer two years ago, vowed to dedicate the little time she has left to making special memories with her children William, 15, and Eve, 12, after being told by doctors that the disease had spread to her hips – and that there was no way to save her.
The 38-year-old, from Crestway near Blackpool Victoria Hospital, now says she has been ‘amazed’ by the generousity of good Samaritans across Blackpool and the Fylde coast who have collectively raised more than £4,000 to her cause.
She says she is going to use the money to splash out on her children’s dream holiday to Disneyland in Orlando, USA, in July next year.
She said: “Up to now we have got £3,100 from online funding, and there’s even more money to come from friends and family fundraisers. There’s probably about £4,000 altogether.
“It’s just amazing. We wanted to raise £1,000 but the donations just kept coming in.
“We have booked the flights and the rest of the money will go towards accommodation and Disneyland tickets. The children are really excited.”
Miss Colledge, who owned her own cleaning business before she became too ill to work, is now looking forward to the time she has left with her children and partner Kenny, 40, thanks to the money raised.
She said: “My children are going to be young when they lose their mum. They took it really well up until the latest diagnosis when the cancer started spreading into my hip bones and my thighs. It was a bit of a wake-up call for all of us.
“Now we’re making a big book of memories that they can look back over then I’m gone. It will be something that will be with them all the time.”
Shaun O’Hagan donated more than £400 to the Colledge family as part of the Blackpool-based good Samaritan group ‘The In Crowd’,
He said: “I saw the story on The Gazette website and since we had friends and knew people who died of cancer we decided to get involved.Obviously the family is devastated by the diagnosis. It’s heart-breaking but Sarah is a fighter and a real inspiration to all of us.”
