A driver was lucky to escape serious injury after it is suspected he fell asleep at the wheel.

The Suzuki Ignis motorist smashed into a parked Fiat Punto and ended up on its roof on Castle Hill Road in Hindley.

Two fire crews attended but the man in his 40s managed to get out of the Suzuki following the early hours smash today (April 10).

Nobody was in the Fiat but it was left damaged by the crash.

Luke McDiarmid, watch manager at Hindley fire station, warned drivers about the dangers of tiredness when driving.

He said: "One pump from Hindley and another from Wigan along with a station manager attended at about 4.50am.

"It is suspected the driver may have fallen asleep at the wheel due to tiredness.

"The male driver was about 45 and his Suzuki Ignus ended up on its roof and collided with a Fiat Punto and damaged that.

"The motorist managed to get out of the car and nobody was in the Fiat. We just made the vehicle safe.

"There was a suspected gas leak also as residents awoken by the incident could smell it, but it was a petrol spillage from the Suzuki.

"Fortunately nobody was hurt and I would like people to take heed of this fact.

He added: "People should be aware of the dangers of driving whilst tired."
