Stephen Sparks, 44, was riding a two-wheeler along Wigan Lane yesterday (Tuesday October 27) afternoon when it was in collision with a van coming in the opposite direction and turning right.

Paramedics worked on the stricken motorcyclist at the scene and also took him to nearby Wigan Infirmary but were, tragically, unable to save him.

His sister Ruth Entwistle took to social media today to speak of her despair, saying: “My heart is shattered.

“My little brother, Stephen Sparks, was killed in a road traffic accident yesterday afternoon.

“We were always, always there for each other, no matter what. I am lost.”

Emma Jane Irvine wrote: “RIP Stephen Sparks. Can’t believe the news this morning; my thoughts are with his family at such sad news.

“An absolute legend and such a lovely lad.”

And Rachel Dootson wrote: “Your gonna be missed so much Stephen Sparks. Life is so cruel. I’ll cherish all our memories and laughs we had.

“RIP thinking of his his kids, family and friends.”

Bolton Coroner’s Court confirmed that details of Mr Sparks’s death had been passed to them today and that an inquest would open in due course.

The collision took place at around 4.25pm yesterday and Wigan Lane was closed to traffic for many hours as investigations were carried out at the scene.

Police are asking anyone who have may have seen the collision or have dashcam footage of it to share it with them as inquiries continue.

Anyone with information, CCTV, Ring doorbell or Dash Cam footage is urged to contact police on 101 and quote log 2393 of 27/10/2026.
