Travellers have sparked outrage after setting up camp on a Wigan playing field less than a day after being evicted from a nearby site.

Reports emerged this morning (Saturday) that a camp has been established on Brockstedes Field in Bryn.

Councillors sprang into action despite having only moved the group on yesterday after they arrived at Bryn Recreational Ground on Monday evening.

Coun Steve Jones, independent representative for Bryn ward, said: "Unfortunately after I had them removed from the rec they didn’t travel very far.

"I have sent emails to the relevant officers in the council but as the offices are shut until Monday I’m struggling with a quick eviction.

"I’ve spoken with the police this morning and I am desperately exploring other avenues to have them removed ASAP.

"I can only apologise to all affected by this but please nobody as rumours suggest take matters into your own hands. If anything serious happens please inform me as it will give me more clout with the police."

The news comes just a day after a failed eviction from Bryn Rec in which bailiffs were reportedly unable to move travellers due to them being "intoxicated".

Yesterday, Coun Jones reported: "The bailiffs are in attendance as planned, however a large percentage of the traveller group are currently intoxicated and unable to drive their vehicles and are becoming increasingly agitated with presence of the bailiffs.

"The bailiffs have liaised with the police and the advice at this stage is to allow the group to sober up then reassess the situation."
