It is being hosted by Wigan University Technical College on New Market Street, Wigan, this Wednesday from 6.30pm to 8.30pm.

Organisers from Wigan COuncil say this session is different from the “bog standard career fair”, with interactive workshops to give visitors the chance to explore what is available to them in the industry, employer stand activites to help them find out more about careers in construction, plus the chance to register for work placements, traineeships and apprenticeships that have been pledged by the employers to be offered to attendees over 2017.

Workshops on various training schemes will be given by firms Seddon Construction and Wilmot Dixon, the latter of which is currently building the new fire brigade and ambulance service hub at Newtown.

The event is timed to coincide with both National Apprenticeship Week and National Careers Week.

Anyone interested in attending must register first at

https://constructionitsnotjustatrade.eventbrite.co.uk. They can bring a parent or friend but they must be registered too. There are 20 places per workshop, over three sessions throughout the event.

Martin Ainscough, chairman of the UTC governing body, said: “This is a great opportunity for young people to talk to employers about the construction industry and engineering and the UTC is thrilled to be hosting such an important event. I would urge people to register now!”

Visitors will also be given a tour of the building complete with its vertical farm.
