Leigh Film Society has been put up for an incredible five awards in the annual bash given by Cinema For All.

The group returned from last year’s ceremony in Sheffield with three prizes, including the biggest award of all for Film Society of the Year.

With the accolade for the country’s finest community cinema organisation not having a shortlist that means this time half a dozen prizes could be returning to Leigh from the Sheffield event in September.

However, the volunteers in Leigh are not getting carried away, saying the competition from other groups of movie fans across the country will be fierce.

Leigh Film Society development director Elizabeth Costello said: “It’s such a proud moment. We didn’t think this would happen for the second year running.

“We just don’t stop, we’re constantly thinking of ways of bring film to new audiences. It means the world to us that we are being noticed across the country for what we are doing.

“We’re not holding our breath about how many awards we might win because the competition is going to be very strong.

“All these people are volunteers wanting the best for their community cinema projects and they put their heart and soul into these organisations. Whoever wins the awards will deserve them.”

Last year Leigh Film Society scooped the prizes for Best Community and Film Development as well as the top gong.

They have the chance to defend all those titles again and have also been nominated for Best Film Programming, Best Marketing and Publicity and Best Single Event for a Leigh Parish Church screening of Suffragette to mark 100 years of some women getting the vote and support the Women Against State Pension Inequality (Waspi) campaign.

The Leigh Film Society puts on monthly screenings of non-mainstream and foreign-language films at The Turnpike Centre, runs two classic cinema clubs in Leigh and Tyldesley and stages one-off screenings for a range of community groups and campaigns.

The society has also been hailed for its work in education developing links with students at Edge Hill University and other colleges and degree-level establishments across the North West.
