Four crews from Wigan Hindley and Skelmersdale were called to Appleby Court in Ellesmere Road, Pemberton, around 4am this morning, April 27.

On arrival they found a fire broken out on the first floor of the 61-bed home. Quick thinking care home staff had evacuated the residents prior to the fire service arriving.

After gaining entry to the building, the crews used breathing apparatus, hose reels and a large fan to stop the fire spreading. The room where the fire started was left with fire damage, and heat damage has affected other rooms on the same floor, the fire service said.

The cause of the incident is still under investigation but it is not being treated as suspicious.

GMFRS spent approximately 90 minutes tackling the fire, but remained on the scene throughout the morning to conduct a fire investigation.

The firefighters praised the Appleby Court employees for their quick thinking, which they said "aided in a successful outcome of the incident".
