Prospect Brewery fired up the equipment at its site on Great George Street last Wednesday and marked the milestone with one of its most successful creations, the pale ale Silver Tally.

The brewery, which is in the process of moving off the Bradley Hall Trading Estate in Standish, also secured a double success last week as Wigan Council approved the licence application for the bar at the new headquarters.

Brewster Patsy Slevin says the firm will not be fully settled in its new home, a former windows showroom, for several weeks yet but admitted it was good to return to brewing quicker than anticipated.

She said: “There’s still a lot to do but to be back brewing again after a two-week break is testament to my fantastic staff.

“It’s also good news that we’ve got the licence to put the bar in down here so we can operate brewery tours.

“It was nice to have the lovely smell of hops wafting over Wigan town centre last week, you could stand outside Wigan Central and know brewing has returned. It was particularly good on Thursday because we made Whatever, which is quite a hoppy beer, and the wind was in the right direction.”

Prospect will continue moving equipment to the new site and hopes to have the bar and tours up and running by either April or May.

The first ale produced at the Great George Street brewery was also symbolically important because it was the 1,500th brew Prospect has made. The firm has created more than three million pints of ale.
