Invite to a royal tea party

The mayor, Coun Susan Loudon, is asking locals to join her in celebrating the Queen's 90th birthday.

Afternoon tea is on the menu for a special group of residents who are joining the Queen in marking their 90th birthday this year.

More than 25 of Wigan Borough’s residents who were born in 1926 have been invited to celebrate their milestone birthday with the Mayor of Wigan Borough, Councillor Susan Loudon, at three afternoon tea events to coincide with the Queen’s birthday.

To go with their tea and birthday cake, guests will be reliving memories of the last 90 years and some of Her Majesty’s other milestones, such as the coronation, the many royal weddings and Silver Jubilee to name a few.

Along with authorities all over the country Wigan Council will be raising the Commonwealth Flag on Thursday April 21, to mark the occasion and is encouraging residents to hold street parties in celebration.

Residents planning street parties are being urged to apply to the council for permission well advance so their plans can go ahead.

The Mayor of Wigan Borough, Coun Susan Loudon, said: “I’m really looking forward to celebrating such a special birthday with some of our eldest residents.

“I’m sure they will all have extremely interesting stories to tell.”

The Mayor will be at the following locations throughout Thursday April 21:

* Morning Coffee at Central Day Centre, Sullivan Way, Wigan, WN1 3TB, 10am–11am

* Lunch at Ashwood Residential Home, 1 Liverpool Road, Ashton-in-Makerfield, Wigan, WN4 9LH, 12.30pm-2pm

* Afternoon tea at Bedford Care Home, Astley Unit, Battersby Street, Leigh, WN7 2AH, 3pm–4pm.

The invite was sent out to a variety of residents, including those living in care homes, people who receive domiciliary care in their own homes and others who live independently within the community.

Anybody wishing to hold a street party for the Queen’s birthday between April and June 2016 are advised to contact the Traffic Group on 01942 489309 .
