The Labour elder statesman, who has been blind since birth, had been due to visit the Guide Dogs training centre in Atherton on Thursday and give a talk in support of Wigan Mayor Coun Susan Loudon’s nominated charity.

He had then been due to give a speech at Leigh Miners’ Welfare Club and tickets had gone on sale at £10 a head for the public event, proceeds from which were going towards Guide Dogs for the Blind.

But last night it was announced that he had been forced to cancel “due to unforeseen circumstances” but that it was hoped that the visit could be re-arranged for a date yet to be set.
