The truck came to grief on Walthew Lane, Platt Bridge, at 7am on Thursday and nearly five hours later no vehicle had come to rescue or repair it.

Long tailbacks soon built up through Hindley, Abram, Spring View and Ince as traffic struggled to get through.

Local resident Malcolm Parkinson said: “The lorry driver is stranded. He has taken to directing traffic but there are no breakdown vehicles to be seen nor any police coming to his aid.”

Another witness said: “Some of the drivers have been getting pretty angry. It really is ridiculous that nothing has been done all morning.”

Greater Manchester Police said they had no report of traffic problems or a vehicle breakdown in Platt Bridge on Thursday morning.
