A rail union was once again holding protests outside a Wigan town centre train station this morning as part of a long-running safety dispute.

RMT members were gathering at Wallgate station between 7.30am and 9.30am to mark two years since Arriva took over the Northern Rail franchise.

The union has been locked in a furious dispute over the retention of guards on the trains and resisting the introduction of driver-only services for well over 12 months.

Strikes have been held on a regular basis but both sides remain firmly at loggerheads with little sign of a resolution.

RMT members were handing out leaflets and calling on Government ministers to axe plans for driver-only trains.

A wave of protests is taking place across the North this week.

The RMT were in Cumbria yesterday and the North West today before protesting in Yorkshire tomorrow and the North East on Friday.
