A system giving easier access to patient records to aid healthcare workers is set to go live across Wigan borough’s care centres.

The new Health Information System (HIS) will be adopted at five borough sites later this month and will provide a “safer, faster and more efficient” service for the benefit of patients.

Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS bosses have said it is pioneering move for the Trust and is one of the biggest initiatives it has undertaken.

HIS will be available for staff at Royal Albert Edward Infirmary, Wrightington Hospital, Leigh Infirmary, Thomas Linacre Centre and Boston House from June 28.

Deputy medical director, Dr Martin Farrier said: “Rapid access to information using the phone in my pocket is my expectation.

“Technology has changed our experience of the world around us.

Healthcare has been slow to adapt to these changes.

“It needed safe systems that share vast vaults of information.

“We are starting up just such a system, and it has the power to change in the same way as the phone in my pocket changed my expectations of the world.”

The new system will help to support the delivery of safer, faster, more efficient care for patients.

“It will reduce the use of paper and ensure that patient notes are always available.

“The system can support doctors and nurses in their care of patients and give them more time to spend with patients, the Trust said.

WWL chief executive Andrew Foster said: “The HIS project is one of the biggest initiatives the Trust has undertaken in recent times and it will put WWL at the forefront of modern healthcare delivery.

“We chose to partner with Allscripts, which is a leading supplier of healthcare solutions and has been used by Salford Royal and Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospitals for a few years, and University Hospital of South Manchester will use it shortly after WWL.

“The Allscripts Sunrise solution fits perfectly with WWL’s mission to be safe, effective and caring and put the patient at the centre of everything we do.”
