PROF KATE ARDERN: Local testing centre now operating

We have now opened a drive-in testing centre on Chapel Lane car park in Wigan where residents can be tested if they present with symptoms of covid-19.

The mobile units are not included on the national booking system and can be booked directly through the council via the website or on the phone.

When requesting a test you’ll need to give some details and your car registration number, and you’ll be given a booking ID number along with the date and time of your test.

The local testing centre is the latest component in our response to the virus and gives us the ability to respond quickly to any local outbreaks of infection.

We now have a robust local test and trace system up and running which allows us to effectively control the virus in the community.

If you are experiencing symptoms of Covid-19, you, your household and anyone included in your support bubble, should begin to self-isolate immediately while you arrange to get a test done as soon as possible.

If you test positive for Covid-19, someone will contact you and ask who you’ve been in recent contact with.

You may want to keep a diary or track of your movements so if this information is needed you can supply it.

You must then self-isolate for 10 days, and people in your household need to isolate for 14 days.

If you need support during your self-isolation period, please get in touch with us and we can help you through our welfare offer.

We can also offer additional support if you’re worrying about your finances.

Although the national support programme has now ended, we’ve still got a local offer and are here to help if you don’t’ have anyone to support you.

As we’ve seen in recent weeks, the government can now step in and impose local restrictions where necessary to prevent further spread of the virus where there are increased rates in towns, cities or regions.

Viruses don’t stick to boundaries, and are easily transmitted from one area to another, so it’s important we follow national guidance and stick to any preventative measures which are implemented.

By not complying with such rules, we could undo all the hard work we’ve already put in to contain and live with covid-19.
