Funding boost for community projects in Wigan

A community garden designed to tackle isolation, and a project to improve access and understanding of a local nature reserve have received funding totalling more than £18,000, thanks to players of People’s Postcode Lottery.

Little Earners was awarded £1,027 to help create a community garden for people living in sheltered accommodation.

It will provide older people with a relaxing outdoor space, an allotment area to grow vegetables and fruit and the opportunity to meet and spend time with others – helping tackle the loneliness and isolation that many people often experience. The funding came from Postcode Local Trust, a grant giving charity funded by the lottery players.

The Wigan Flashes Conservation and Community Group will be using funding of £17,344, also from Postcode Local Trust, to improve pathways, signage and create engaging information boards throughout the local nature reserve, helping to improve access, understanding and enjoyment of the 264-hectare attraction.

The funding boost, which is set to make a real difference to two community focused projects, was welcomed by Yvonne Fovargue, MP for Makerfield.

She said: “The benefits of spending time outdoors are countless, so it’s wonderful that two very different environmental focused projects have been funded.

“And I’m pleased that with the support of players of People’s Postcode Lottery, these local good causes will now be able to bring their great ideas to life. Ideas that will bring people together, tackle loneliness and improve the lives of residents and the wider community.” Katherine Sellar, Community Programmes Advisor at People’s Postcode Lottery added: “It’s not just players that win with People’s Postcode Lottery – charities do too.

“It’s great that funding raised by players will support two local projects and their efforts. Whether that’s building a sense of togetherness or helping create greater enjoyment of the natural environment, players of People’s Postcode Lottery are making a real difference.”

Last year, more than £8m raised by players of People’s Postcode Lottery was distributed to grassroots projects across Britain.

The next opportunity for local charities and good causes to apply for funding will be in August 2020. Funding is available through three trusts, with each supporting projects focused on different themes.
