Both the former Orwell and The Way We Were are now weatherproofed after window and cladding work ended and land to the west has been cleared for carparking plus eight homes by Seven Stars Bridge.

Museum relics on the land will move to the education centre, functions venue and food hall into which the premises will have been converted by autumn.

Meanwhile developer Step Places says it is now replacing the buildings’ rotten verandahs. The canalside awning on the old museum is also coming down.
