A Wigan-based singer-songwriter is swapping the stage for a webcam as he performs a show online.

John Anderton will be the first performer to appear in an online show hosted by Wigan University of the Third Age (U3A).

He will be introduced by chairman Alan Lang at 11am on Thursday before singing for around 30 minutes on video conferencing platform Zoom.

If it proves to be a success, U3A hope to organise more shows with local performers.

John, who is originally from London and now based in Wigan, plays music classed as modern folk/rock with the occasional touch of Americana.

He recently recorded a live acoustic album entitled Songs From The Kitchen Table - inspired by the place he writes most of his songs - and has supported various artists on tour.

As Baroness Barran said in a House of Lords debate this week on the importance of journalists: "Not only are they a trusted source of facts, but they will have a role to play in rallying communities and getting the message across about how we can keep ourselves and our families safe, and protect our NHS. Undoubtedly, they have a critical role."
