Actor and comedian Steve Coogan endorses Labour's Andy Burnham in Makerfield by-election campaign video

A famous face has appeared in a video alongside Labour’s Makerfield by-election candidate Andy Burnham.

The Greater Manchester mayor speaks about “fighting on every front” and that some people said he was “losing the poster war” – before revealing a huge campaign banner on a building behind him.

Mr Burnham then said someone had told him other campaigns featured celebrities, adding: “I’m gonna have to work harder on this front”.

The camera then pans round to show actor and comedian Steve Coogan, who is perhaps best known for his character Alan Partridge.

Mr Coogan says: “Andy wanted a slightly classier celebrity to endorse his campaign, but he had to put up with me instead.”

The video ends with Mr Burnham saying he was doing “everything possible” and “not taking anything for granted, not a single vote”.

Makerfield voters will go to the polls tomorrow to choose their next MP.

The by-election candidates are: Jake Austin (Liberal Democrats), Count Binface (Count Binface Party), Andy Burnham (Labour and Co-operative Party), Dan Clarke (Libertarian Party), John Dyer (independent), Ed Gemmell (Climate Party), Paul Gould (independent), Howling Laud Hope (Official Monster Raving Loony Party), Rob Kenyon (Reform UK), Robert Pownall (independent), Rebecca Shepherd (Restore Britain), Sarah Wakefield (Green Party), Peter Ward (Rejoin EU Bring in PR) and Michael Winstanley (Conservative).
