The proposals by applicant Jeff Johnson Cars Ltd for the development would see nine houses built on land where the XII Apostles Youth Club on Taylor Street in Leigh was based.

Originally the plans had been for 11 homes but that was scaled back due to eight initial objections from locals.

However, a report set to be considered by Wigan Council’s planning committee next week, said that residents have submitted a further seven comments raising concerns about the scheme.

These include parking during the building of the development, road safety, increased load on the local water and seweraye system and its overlooking a nearby nursery.

But council planners have now recommended that the application for theb three-bedroom homes is approved, subject to conditions.

The brownfield site is currently used for storing motor vehicles after the youth club was demolished in 2017.

Documents submitted as part of the plans said the homes are market appropriate for the surrounding area and have been designed to meet the local housing demands.

Parking and landscaping are also included in the plan while the main vehicular site access is to be taken off Taylor Street

Recommending the plans for approval, the report said: “The proposal seeks to construct nine dwellings, with associated access, parking andlandscaping,

“The site is located within the urban area in a sustainable location.

“The principle of residential development is considered acceptable, with the layout and form of the proposal designed to complement the application site character of the local area, whilst respecting the amenity of existing neighbouring properties and achieving satisfactory amenity for prospective residents.”

The council's planning committee meet on Tuesday, August 11.
