Facebook community groups in the borough shared the call for signatures and there was also discussion of setting up a petition to show the local authority the strength of support for the business.

Martin's Whippy took down the original Facebook message which had asked for support but in the replacement post said the backing of the public would still be gratefully appreciated.

The post also thanked Wiganers who had gone public with their support for the consent to be renewed.

Wigan Council said the circumstances of the situation warranted putting the renewal before the licensing committee.

Julie Middlehurst, service manager for regulatory services at town hall, said: “The licensing committee is due to discuss his suitability to continue to hold a street trading consent.

“The meeting has been arranged in response to information received by the Licensing Authority in the interests of public safety and is routine in matters such as this.”
