Long tailbacks on motorway after collision near Wigan

The incident has closed a lane of the M6 and caused around 3.5 miles of congestion.

The collision occurred on Tuesday afternoon between junction 27 of the M6 at Standish and junction 28 at Leyland on the northbound carriageway.

It is not clear how many vehicles are involved.

Highways England tweeted that anyone travelling northbound through the borough should expect to add at least half an hour to their journey time.

Traffic officers were sent to the scene shortly before 2.30pm.
