Reception and Year One classrooms at Bickershaw Primary School have already been expanded – and now there are proposals to do the same for Year Two.

The school said its current classroom is “undersized” and has a “poor learning environment.”

They said there is a lack of space including clutter and a shortfall of appropriate storage, as well as ineffective lighting and a poor design.

Planning documents submitted as part of an application to Wigan Council read: “The proposal comprises of the extension of the existing undersized Year Two classroom provision with a monopitched metal roofing system and masonry expansion which will match and adhere to the existing systems in place.

“The extension to the classroom will partially extend into the existing grass at the rear of the school, matching the appearance and profile of the Year One room which was extended in 2019/2020.

“The height of the new extension does not exceed the existing school building and will tie in with the current levels.”

The school said it had also seen increased pupil numbers in recent times.

Calling on the council to give the green light to the plans, the documents added: “Due to the increased intake numbers, the existing classroom is undersized and requires extending in order to provide a suitable space that is deemed fit for purpose.

“The works will comprise of a single storey extension with a mono-pitch roof.

“We believe that the proposals presented by this application for full planning permission are in keeping with the existing school buildings massing and architectural detailing, therefore we feel that this application should be approved by the local authority.”
