Warning after 100 tonnes of fly-tipping set on fire in Wigan

A warning has been issued after fly-tipping was set on fire in Wigan.

Firefighters were called to the fire involving 100 tonnes of building waste, on Cemetery Road, at about 9am today (November 8).

Two fire crews from Wigan spent around four hours tackling the blaze which is being treated as deliberate.

Fire chiefs are now urging people to dispose and recycle waste properly.

Crew manager Gerry Davis from Wigan fire station said: "Two crews from Wigan were called to a fire involving 100 tonnes of fly-tipped building waste on Cemetery Road.

"Firefighters were dealing with the fire and its environmental impacts such as smoke flumes for around four hours.

He added: "Things like this have a huge drain on resources so we would urge people to recycle waste properly."

The police, environmental agency and council have all been made aware of the waste.
