The event, led by the Be More Initiative CIC, aimed to honour local Black people who have contributed to Wigan Borough, past and present, and recognise those making a difference now.

Founder of the Be More Initiative, Natasha Amadi, said: “It’s very important to mark Black History Month, which is a celebration that’s held every October around the globe.

“This year it’s all about honouring our roots and communities and the Black people who have contributed to Wigan Borough, both in the past and today, honouring those who have come before us and recognising those who are making a difference now, as history is written every day.”

Speakers at the event included local authors, business owners and motivational speakers, who each shared their individual stories of overcoming challenges and achieving success.

Natasha said: “Strong communities don’t happen by accident, people need inspiration and support.

“I hope the event today will help people find the good in any bad experiences and go forward with confidence and purpose.”
