Best known for his titular role in Black Panther, Boseman’s family announced on Friday that the 43-year-old star had died following a private four-year battle with colon cancer.

Former US president Barack Obama was among those paying tribute, while Boseman’s Marvel co-stars also shared their memories of the actor.

Before he found fame as one of the most beloved superheroes, Boseman delivered heavyweight performances as a groundbreaking sportsman, a legendary musician and a civil rights lawyer.

Here are just some of Boseman’s finest roles.

Lincoln Heights, 2008-2009 (Amazon Prime)

Boseman cut his acting teeth with big part appearances in hit serial shows ER, Third Watch and CSI: NY, but it was with Lincoln Heights that the Oxford University trained actor earned his first concrete, recurring role.

The series follows a family starting a new life in a dangerous Los Angeles neighbourhood, with Boseman featuring as a long lost child suffering from Post-traumatic stress disorder following a military tour in Iraq.

42, 2013 (Amazon Prime)

It was as legendary baseball player Jackie Robinson that Chadwick Boseman enjoyed his breakout role.

The then up-and-coming actor impressed with his unflinching, stoical performance as Robinson who became the first African-American to compete in major league baseball in the face of violent racism.

Get On Up, 2014 (Netflix)

If Boseman’s performance as Robinson was understated, his turn as James Brown was anything but, embracing the larger than life funk legend’s personality from start to finish.

Charting Brown’s rag to riches story Boseman is flawless in an often flawed film.

Marshall, 2017 (Amazon Prime)

A year before his star turn as T’Challa in Black Panther, Boseman impressed as crusading civil rights lawyer Thurgood Marshall.

Marshall follows the first African-American Supreme Court Justice judge as he defends a black man accused of raping a white woman in a career defining case.

As the eponymous character Boseman is outstanding, embodying Marshall’s self-assured charisma and unflinching idealism.

Da 5 Bloods, 2020 (Netflix)

Months prior to his passing, Boseman appeared in the critically acclaimed Da 5 Bloods.

Four Vietnam war veterans return to the country to track the remains of their old squad leader Stormin’ Norman, played by Boseman.

Speaking after news of Boseman’s passing became public, director Spike Lee praised Boseman for his performance in the film, describing him as “A trooper”.
