Best foot forward: Where to go for a wonderful wildlife walk in Wigan with the family this spring.

If you’re off work over Easter, make the most of your time by getting outside for a great spring walk.

Whether you fancy a short, gentle stroll or a more energetic hike, spring is a wonderful time to get outdoors and embrace nature.

You won’t have to venture far to find beautiful blossoms including daffodils and bluebells, and the sound of birdsong, if you are lucky enough to live near woodlands or a park.

Wigan is spoilt for choice when it comes to country parks and nature reserves, which provide the perfect setting for a spring walking adventure.

Wigan Council recommends these top tips at Wigan’s Greenheart where you can explore:

· Haigh Woodland Park: 250 acres of park and woodland with lots of trails through the forest and magnificent views across the Douglas Valley to the Welsh Hills.

· Pennington Flash: A popular country park and nature reserve with a lake at its centre. Famous for its wildlife, walkers can spot rare birds and take in the breathtaking scenery. The lake also offers open water swimming, which is great for warm weather.

· Amberswood and Low Hall: A mix of woodlands, wildflower meadows, grasslands and wetlands make this rich in wildlife and habitats to explore on foot. This nature reserve is a special haven for nesting birds, and you may get a glimpse of the protected water vole.
