Deadline day: What can we expect from Wigan Athletic?

Despite still being in administration, having no money and boasting a full squad, Wigan Athletic could well be getting involved in some last-minute transfer business before Monday night's 11pm deadline.

Latics confirmed over the weekend the return of Rotherham centre-back Curtis Tilt on loan for the rest of the season, to make it 23 players who have played first-team football - the maximum allowed under EFL administration rules.

But acting manager Leam Richardson is still understood to be looking for further reinforcements, with Plymouth centre-back Scott Wootton believed to be a target.

Latics have also been linked with Dundee United defender Ryan Edwards, with former striker Will Grigg an emotional but very long shot to return from Sunderland on a temporary basis.

But for every player in, Richardson would have to offload one of his existing players.

Latics remain confident they can hold off the vultures circling for prize assets Kyle Joseph and Tom Pearce.

The alternative would be to lose a young player who has featured in the first team, and therefore 'counting' towards the limit - similar to the recent departures of Patrick Webber, Joe Piggott and Charlie Jolley.

Piggott has at least got fixed up already, the big striker rejoining Conference promotion-chasers Altrincham.

It was a blank weekend on the field for Latics, whose League One clash at fellow strugglers Northampton was postponed just two-and-a-half hours before kick-off due to a waterlogged pitch.

As a result, Latics remain second-bottom in the table, ahead of Tuesday night's trip to third-bottom Swindon, with the fixture at fifth-bottom Northampton now having to be crammed into an already-congested fixture list.

Although there were wins for Shrewsbury and Rochdale in the bottom eight, sixth-bottom Bristol Rovers, fourth-bottom AFC Wimbledon - next Saturday's opponents - and Swindon all lost, meaning Latics remain just points adrift of safety with exactly half of the campaign still to play.
