Connolly becomes Latics’ ninth signing of the summer transfer window, and the second Everton player to sign for Wigan on loan after Antonee Robinson’s arrival last Friday.

The 20-year-old is returning for his second career loan spell at Wigan, after spending five-months at the club between January and May in 2017 under Warren Joyce.

Connolly made 17 appearances in his previous stint at the DW Stadium, memorably making an immediate impression by scoring a brace on his debut at Burton Albion, despite only being announced as a Latics player at 2pm on the match-day.

Since his initial loan at the DW Stadium last year, Connolly spent the 2017-18 campaign on loan with Ipswich Town, where he was largely used in central midfield for the first time in his career. Connolly featured in 36 matches, scoring on four occasions.

In July, Connolly played in four of the five matches as England Under 21’s won the 2018 Toulon tournament, with Latics’ newest recruit even getting on the scoresheet against Scotland in the semi-final.

Latics boss Paul Cook said: "“Callum is a bright young player, who had a good year with Ipswich Town in the Championship, and he will add to our midfield."
