“You need to be playing games, he said. "You can be a good player, but if you’re not playing games, then that doesn’t matter.

"All the games I’ve played, hopefully it’s going to set me up for the rest of my career. I want to play as many games as I can here, get my fitness and confidence back, and just enjoy it."

Shaw started his career with Sheffield Wednesday, but caught the attention of Celtic in 2021 after three years at Hillsborough.

However, he found game-time hard to come by at Celtic, and made only one appearance – off the bench – during his time in Glasgow.

He spent the second half of the 2021-22 campaign on loan at Motherwell, before spending the entire 2022-23 campaign with Morecambe – where one of his team-mates was Latics Academy product Jensen Weir.

Shaw then signed another 12-month loan deal with Latics, covering last season.

He made 26 appearances for Latics as they achieved a top-half finish in League One.

Shaw also played in the FA Cup third-round tie against Manchester United, conceding the controversial second-half penalty that sealed a 2-0 victory for Erik ten Hag’s men at a packed DW Stadium.
