The 24-year-old, who is out of contract at the end of the campaign, has been strongly linked with a move to the DW Stadium during the January transfer window.

He even said his goodbyes in the corporate areas after last Saturday’s 2-1 home defeat to Millwall, in which he opened the scoring, hinting at an imminent move.

However, Chesterfield chief executive Chris Turner insists that’s not the case.

The Spireites have fielded an enquiry from a League One side, understood to be Latics.

But Turner says the player will be going nowhere unless their valuation - believed to be in the region of £250,000 - is met.

“I was disappointed to hear Sam had made comments which suggested he was on the move,” said Turner.

“Yes, there has been an enquiry from another League One club, but we have yet to receive an offer from them.

“Until we receive an offer that matches our valuation of Sam, he will remain a Chesterfield player.

“Sam will be out of contract in the summer, and we have made attempts to secure him on a new deal.

“But he has made it clear that he would like to move.

“It is now a case of seeing whether a suitable deal can be agreed with another club, or if Sam remains with us until the end of the season.

“I can assure our fans that our decision will be made, as always, in the best interests of the club.

“We only want players who are committed to the club, and we will not stand in the way of any player who does not want to play for us.

“Sam has made a valuable contribution during his time at the club, and he will leave with our best wishes - whether it is during this transfer window or when he is a free agent at the end of the season.”
