Power: We can Bury the Shakers

Max Power insists Saturday's opponents Bury do not have a psychological hold over Wigan Athletic.

The sides will do battle this weekend for the fourth time this term, with Latics still seeking their first victory.

Bury knocked Latics out of both domestic cup competitions - winning 2-1 at the DW in the League Cup back in August, before a 4-0 FA Cup demolition on home soil in November.

Latics also required two late goals to rescue a point from an eventful league clash at Gigg Lane in October.

But Power does not feel Bury are anything remotely resembling a bogey side for Latics ahead of the corresponding fixture at the DW.

“If you look back at the three games we’ve played, you can’t read too much into them,” Power said.

“The FA Cup game was just a bad day for us, the League Cup tie was very early in the season when we hadn’t got going, and I thought we fully dominated the league game even though we needed two late goals to get a point.

“You could say we have a score to settle, but it’s just another game and you can’t afford to be getting carried away with that.

“Every game between now and the end of the season will be a big game, regardless of the opposition.

“We’re just concentrating on taking each game as it comes and taking three points from the next one, starting against Bury.

“Facing Bury is nothing we need to worry about. If we perform at our best we can beat anyone in this division.”

Latics couldn’t be going into the game in better spirits, following an 11-match unbeaten run has seen them climb to second spot in League One.

Yanic Wildschut popped up with a dramatic stoppage-time winner off the bench in the 2-1 win at Walsall last weekend.

And Power says that backs-to-the-wall effort bodes well for the rest of the campaign.

“Obviously games like Saturday, against one of our rivals, mean a lot, and for Yanic to pop up in the last minute was fantastic,” he acknowledged.

“You look at the team at the moment, and the subs we were able to bring on, and as an opposing team you wouldn’t be too happy.

“We’ve got match-winners throughout the team, we’re all pulling in the same direction, and things are going great.

“It shows we’ve got good character in the squad, and we go right to the end in every single game.

“I’m sure it’ll come in handy come the end of the season with all the extra points.”

Having endured back-to-back relegations with Tranmere immediately prior to his move to Wigan, Power is relishing life at the right end of the table.

“When you’ve suffered a couple of years like I’ve had with Tranmere, and not winning many games, it is nice to be in a winning team again,” he added.

“All we can do is go about our business quietly and keep chipping away at the other teams.

“I’ve also been in teams before that have been at the top of the league, and you do start to feel the pressure towards the end. Hopefully it can happen again and we can take advantage.”
