Latics had an early scare when George Johnston and Jamie Jones got into a muddle, as the former attempted a backpass to the latter.

Thankfully for Latics, Jones was able to get back before the Burton attackers could pounce, at the expense of a corner.

Credit to Burton, they were giving Latics more problems than any side in recent weeks, with Lee Evans and Funso Ojo unable to control the midfield as usual.

And the visitors took a deserved lead on 16 minutes, with Joe Powell curling a brilliant free-kick over the wall and into the top corner from just outside the box.

Latics gradually got more and more of a foothold in the game, and pulled themselves level on 37 minutes.

Evans won a corner after his cross-shot was touched around the post by the Burton goalkeeper.

And the Wales international's inswinging set-piece was headed home powerfully by Will Keane - in almost identical fashion to his goal at Shrewsbury in midweek.

The second half didn't contain as much goalmouth action, with Ojo seeing a rasping drive blocked by a despairing defender at the three-quarter mark.

Latics had a glorious chance to win it in stoppage-time but, after Joe Dodoo headed down Evans' corner, Johnston lashed his shot high and wide from the penalty spot.

Although Latics are four points clear of fourth-bottom Northampton, third-bottom Rochdale have a game in hand, which could see them climb to within two points of Leam Richardson's men.
