Spanish 'would wait for Wigan Athletic even in League Two'

It’s been more than two months since the administrators accepted the bid from the Spanish, who put up a ‘substantial’ deposit for exclusivity.

Since then, the EFL have been going through the application with a fine tooth comb, with several meetings and discussions having yet to reach a decision either way.

In the meantime, the team is in deep trouble, rooted to the foot of League One and without a win in 13 matches.

With every day that passes, the chances of avoiding a second relegation in a row become less – especially with the transfer window about to open and no groundwork able to be done.

However, any suggestion the Spanish might get sick of waiting and pull the plug could not be further from the truth.

“If the worst happens that the team is relegated to League Two, the investors are still committed to the project,” revealed a source close to the Spanish investors.

“Obviously it will take longer to get back up, but they have decided to go in one way or another. Unless at one point – I don’t know how or why – the computer says ‘no’. And then it is what it is.

“These are long-term investors and have a great project for Wigan.

“They are the only ones that have not speculated with the situation of the team or tried to get a bargain, they paid the asking price and moved in.

“I still think this will happen. I just cannot tell you when.”

Having previously expressed plans to bring in ‘five or six’ new players next month, the Spanish acknowledge that task is becoming more difficult as time passes.

“The investors think there is time to solve the sports situation,” the source added. “They have been in similar situations before both with Albacete and with Leganes.

“But they are not magicians, no-one is. Once you go deep in the bottom of the table, then you are there.

“Obviously there are still 30 matches to be played, but we are last in the table.

“Wigan at the moment have a more difficult task than anybody else in the league, that is the reality.

“We need to get in there and start working as soon as we can.

“December is already going to be a crazy month – and that’s if we go in now.

“We need to bring in six or seven players, and all of that takes time.

“Time is not on our side, and the most immediate concern is on the sporting side.

“We need to improve the league position, and to do that we need the decision from the EFL.

“In the meantime, we need the people who are there to do everything they can to see us through to December 31.

“Because if that doesn’t happen, we are out anyway.”
