Vuckic return hopes increase

Haris Vuckic has admitted his Newcastle United future looks bleak - which is sure to be of great interest to Wigan Athletic boss Gary Caldwell.

The Slovenia international spent last season on loan at Wigan, for whom he scored two goals in 15 appearances - including a crucial winning goal against Bradford in March.

Before leaving Latics at the end of his loan spell, he spoke of his love for the town - which would ‘always be in my heart’ after his daughter was born here - and revealed he’d love to stay on if all parties were in agreement.

Latics boss Caldwell also refused to rule out the possibility of keeping Vuckic, either by way of a loan extension or a permanent deal, despite not having seen the best of him due to injury.

“You never say never in this game” Caldwell admitted earlier this month.

The player’s return to Newcastle has not gone swimmingly, with Vuckic turning out for the Under-21s at the weekend.

The 23-year-old netted in a 5-1 victory over Darlington, but placed a huge question mark over his future under Rafa Benitez with his post-match comments confirming his frustration at the situation.

“At the moment I’m not in his plans,” Vuckic told the Chronicle.

“But hopefully with my games I can show him that I can at least deserve a chance and that he can try me in different positions.

“Hopefully he will do that.”

Latics will of course be playing against Newcastle this coming season, having won promotion from League One in style and the Toon suffering relegation from the Premier League.
