What might have been, reflects Wigan Athletic star

Gary Roberts says he departs Wigan Athletic with a feeling of 'what might have been' after seeing a team capable of reaching the Premier League ripped apart almost overnight.

The 36-year-old called time on his near three-and-a-half year tenure with Latics on Monday, with the club currently propping up League One and having been dumped out of the FA Cup by non-league Chorley.

For a side that ended last term as the form team in the Championship - before being placed into administration and subsequently relegated - it's been a heartbreaking few months.

"You just look back on that group, and you realise what a good group it was," acknowledged Roberts.

"Every single player has gone on to a good move, a good club, and doing well elsewhere.

"It just makes it even more heartbreaking to think about what we might have been capable of.

"We were maybe three or four players off having a good push at it (promotion) this year.

"All the lads who left, we all still keep in touch, and everyone's saying that the Championship isn't as strong this year, and we wouldn't have been far off.

"With three or four players to strengthen, you'd certainly like to think we would have been up there at the right end of the division.

"But if you think about that too much, you'd end up jumping out of a window.

"You can't be thinking about that...it just makes what happened even worse."
