The on-loan Everton midfielder had initially been ruled out for the season, after being stretchered off during the victory over Sheffield Wednesday in January.

However, with the campaign having been put on hold because of the Covid-19 pandemic, Dowell has been given an unexpected – but very welcome – second chance to make his mark at the DW.

“It’s been a new experience for everyone hadn’t it, being in lockdown,” said Dowell, who is hoping to be involved at Huddersfield on Saturday.

“And for me personally, I’ve been quite lucky, with it having coincided with my injury.

“It was a three-or-four month injury, but I haven’t actually missed that many games. And now I’m back at full fitness and ready for the season to start again.”

Dowell had only been at Wigan a matter of weeks when he was sidelined, having spent a frustrating first half of the campaign on loan at Derby.

“I hadn’t played too many games this season, before I came here,” he recognised.

“I was just starting to get into my stride, and it’ll be great to get going again.”

Dowell has revealed for the first time the unfortunate setback that affected his recovery.

“When I twisted the ankle against Sheffield Wednesday, it was only initially three weeks,” he added.

“I was trying to get back for the weekend, and it’s gone in training again. This time it was the ligaments, meaning an operation, and I was absolutely devastated.

“From working my way back to the squad, and for it to go again, it was a sucker punch.

“To be honest, I was on the floor when I was told I would be out for the rest of the season. To get the last nine games is unreal now for me, and I’m wanting to make the most of that.”
