The 31-year-old joined Latics from the Premier League club in January, with his contract due to expire on June 30.

But with the campaign having been extended due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Latics have been granted permission to retain his services until the last game of the season on July 22.

Ben White (Leeds), Matt Clarke (Derby), Jayson Molumby (Millwall) have also been allowed to stay with their loan clubs, while Anthony Knockaert is expected to remain with Fulham permanently this summer.

“All the guys who are on loan will stay and finish their loan spells," said Brighton head coach Graham Potter.

“Then we will discuss at the end of the season what the next plan is for them.

“Each individual is different, of course, and we will make those decisions at the end of the season.”

Balogun looks to have played his last game for Brighton, with his contract up in any case this summer.

Latics are unbeaten with the German-born Nigeria international in the side, having racked up three wins and three draws - and four clean sheets - from his six appearances.

Brighton team-mate Jan Mlakar, who also joined on loan from Brighton in January, will be staying too, although he has yet to be seen on the field so far.

It's expected Dujon Sterling (Chelsea), Kieran Dowell (Everton) and Alex Dobre (Bournemouth) will also be extending their loan deals, although that has still to be confirmed.

Latics forward Josh Windass will remain with Sheffield Wednesday for the last nine games.
