Wigan Athletic snap up ex-Brentford defender

Wigan Athletic have signed former Brentford right-back Josh Clarke on a short-term deal ahead of this weekend's League One opener at Ipswich.

The 26-year-old turned out for Latics in the midweek Development Squad friendly against Fylde, and takes Nathan Byrne's No.2 shirt in the squad.

Clarke made 72 Championship appearances for the Bees, scoring three goals, before leaving Griffin Park at the beginning of the year.

"It's been a long wait for me and I'm glad it's been sorted and I can finally get back to playing," he said.

"I'd spent nine years at Brentford when I left in January, and then the Covid situation obviously disrupted my plans.

"When you're training by yourself for a long period of time, it's different, you have to keep pushing yourself all the time.

"You miss being part of a squad, and I'm happy to be back in a group and I can't wait to get going."
