Wigan Athletic star Lee Evans has been booked in for knee surgery which could rule him out for a sizeable chunk of the rest of the season.

The 26-year-old has been limited to just a dozen appearances this term due to injury problems.

Indeed, his man-of-the-match display in the 1-0 victory at Sunderland on December 5 was his only outing in the last two months.

But he reported after-effects to the run-out which, after seeing a specialist, which will require surgery to fix.

"Lee Evans is going in for an operation on his knee next Tuesday," reported acting manager Leam Richardson.

"We won't know the extent of that - and whether it's weeks or months - for a few days."

And the news regarding the rest of the walking wounded - including Kal Naismith, Gavin Massey, Matty Palmer - isn't much better ahead of Saturday's trip to Fleetwood.

"Kal will be the flip of a coin whether he plays, it's how he reacts to a few days training this week, and whether we're brave enough to throw him straight back in.

"Apart from that, we've got a few other lads back out there on the grass, but do we have the luxury of throwing them straight back in?

"Even on Tuesday, you're very mindful Will Keane and Darnell Johnson playing too many games to start with, we have Tom Pearce who takes a whack and has to come off."
