Wigan Athletic’s stars of the future edged Manchester United in a five-goal thriller at Christopher Park to kick off their Under-17 Premier League Cup campaign in style.

Chris Sze, Millen Brown and Levi Welsh all on target in a 3-2 victory over their illustrious neighbours.

Peter Murphy’s first-year scholars, who were invited into the competition as a result of winning the Under-18 Professional Development League North last season, went behind early on.

But Sze and Brown were on target before Welsh grabbed a memorable winner in difficult conditions.

Murphy’s youngsters will face Burnley and Everton in their remaining group stage matches.
