Gary Caldwell’s men put their disappointing league form to one side as they cruised past an opposition that had gone into the game as favourites with the bookmakers.

But from the minute Jon Mellish opened the scoring inside 11 minutes, after good work from Christian Saydee, there was only one winner.

Morgan Fox doubled the lead nine minutes before the break with a brilliant free-kick into the top corner from 25 yards out.

And the veteran centre-back added his second and Wigan’s third with 16 minutes to go, heading home Max Power’s inswinging corner.

It could and perhaps should have been more, with Connor Barrett clearly being felled in the home box during the second half, only for the officials to inexplicably allow play to continue.
