Will is Keane for Wigan Athletic to 'build on' real platform
Will Keane has challenged Wigan Athletic to 'build on' their Great Escape from relegation in the new era under Phoenix 2021 Limited.
The former Manchester United junior played a key role in Latics securing their safety with one game to go.
His 10 goals in 33 appearances not only make him top scorer this term, it also represents the best-ever seasonal tally of his career.
And having already revealed his desire to stay on beyond the expiry of his contract this summer, Keane believes the future is very bright for Latics.
“We’ve worked hard these last couple of months for everyone associated with this club," he said.
“The lads thoroughly deserve it. It’s been a tough year for everyone associated with the club.
"But we’ve come out of it on the other side. Hopefully, we can build on that next year.
“When you see the togetherness of all the lads and the team spirit, we knew we were capable of staying up.
“We’ve been on a great run this last month, we got the points when we needed them at crucial times, and it’s great to see the rewards.
“We knew we had the quality in the squad, and we’ve fielded the same 11 these last few games, and it clicked into gear for us."
Keane also hailed boss Leam Richardson, who recently accepted the post of full-time manager after his sterling efforts during the most difficult campaign in the club's history.
“The gaffer has been brilliant," Keane added. “He steadied the ship.
"Regardless of what’s been happening on the outside, that hasn’t come into the dressing room.
"He’s kept everyone focused and heading in the right direction, he showed his loyalty and stuck with the club, and he’s been rewarded.”
