He will take on Russian featherweight Movsar Evloev at Yas Island in Abu Dhabi - as part of the UFC's four 'Fight Island' events.

Grundy posted a picture on social media of himself signing a contract and though UFC has yet to confirm the fight, MMA Junkie reports the two fighters will meet on July 25.

The 33-year-old has previously spoken of his desire to get back in action after his March fight, against Makwan Amirkhani at London’s O2, became the first UFC event to be cancelled due to the coronavirus crisis.

Grundy was due to fight Evloev in August last year, but the Wiganer was forced to withdraw due to injury - meaning he hasn't fought since his winning debut in March, 2019.

His opponent next month has won both his UFC appearances by unanimous decision, and has an MMA record of 12-0. Grundy's is similar, having also won 12 fights, as well as a solitary loss.

Grundy's training partner, Darren Till, will top the bill against Robert Whittaker.

And he hopes victory next month will catapult him further up the rankings.

“I want to be the featherweight UFC champion and I do believe that will happen one day," said Grundy recently.

“I think I’ll have a longer career, I’ve had 13 MMA fights and taken no damage really. My career can be quite decent.”

UFC made a return with behind-closed-doors events in Florida and Las Vegas.

But travel restrictions in America prevent many international fighters from entering the country to compete, leading to UFC president Dana White setting up a ‘Fight Island’ where fights can be staged.

Grundy, a former Commonwealth Games medal-winning wrestler, fights out of Team Kaobon in Liverpool.

But the lockdown has forced him into a new routine involving fitness sessions, as well as wrestling and pad work, with his 15-year-old son, Jack.

He can use the facilities at his own gym, Elite Fitness Factory at Eckersley Mill.
