She won her first race of the year in 1:59.03 in Vienna, slicing two seconds off the previous world record.

The 18-year-old hails from Leigh and is coached by Trevor Painter, husband and former coach of Jenny Meadows.

Her time saw her move to fourth in the UK all-time indoor senior rankings behind Jemma Reekie, Meadows and Laura Muir - and ahead of double-Olympic champion Kelly Holmes.

And it also saw her qualify for this summer's scheduled Olympics in Tokyo.

Coach Painter said her achievement was even more impressive given the travel problems getting to Austria.

Hodgkinson, whose previous PB was 2:01.16, said: "It was all about not panicking when they all went off so fast but to be honest it could not have gone better so I’m really happy.

“It’s my first race of the season. I did this meet last year so I seem to run quite well here. I’m not sure what’s next but you take what you can in these uncertain times. I’m just really happy to be racing."
