Adrian Lam is Coach of the Year... but Steel award goes to Cas'

But star players Bevan French and Liam Farrell – both shortlisted for the Steve Prescott Man of Steel – missed out on the main prize.

Castleford hooker Paul McShane took the coveted award.

Lam won the coach award after guiding Wigan to the League Leaders Shield and securing a place in Friday’s Grand Final. The former halfback, expected to stay on next season, won more votes from the other Super League head coaches than anyone else.

McShane’s win of the Steve Prescott Man of Steel may raise some eyebrows, given Castleford finished the season 8th – and the strong form of other candidates such as French, Farrell and St Helens’ Lachlan Coote.

For the past two years, the winner has been selected by a leaderboard, in which a panel of legends award points – 3, 2 and 1 – to the three players adjudged the best in every Super League game.

Historically, an anonymous panel used to select the prize before that was changed to a players vote in recent seasons, until the shake-up for the start of last year.

Leeds’ Harry Newman won the Super League Young Player of the Year.

Lam, meanwhile, will take part in a pre-Grand Final press conference tomorrow when he is expected to provide an update on Ben Flower (hamstring injury) as well as Sam Powell, who missed the semi-final for a family issue.
