Sutton versatility impresses Wane

The prop switched to right-side second row during the first-half of Friday’s 23-20 win against Salford.

Greg Burke, who had started in that role, left the action after a heavy knock and didn’t return.

In his place, Sutton impressed on that edge and even scored a try when he latched onto George Williams’ measured kick.

And Wane says he was pleased with the academy-product’s show of versatility, if not surprised.

He said: “Ryan did a great job on that edge.

“He’s a really good talent and I’m impressed by what he did.

“I’ve always said I don’t like pigeon-holing players into certain roles, I like having the options of moving them around and this is another one.”

Burke will need another check this week but is expected to be fit to travel to Hull KR - where he spent last season on loan - this Friday.

And the Warriors will be hunting their fourth straight victory on the road to keep up the heat at the top of the Super League ladder.

Their victory over Leeds at the Magic Weekend has been followed by impressive victories against Castleford and Salford - two away grounds Wigan suffered defeats at last year.

They also lost at Hull KR in 2015, but Wane says there is a different feel to their away form this year.

“A lot of people talked about our away form last year,” he said. “There’s a toughness in the team which I’ve not seen in a while.

“We showed that toughness at Salford to grind out the win, and that quality is going to be important when we get into the big games towards the end of the year.”
