The Liam Farrell column: '˜My mate Josh will be a big asset for Wolves'

I spoke to him a couple of weeks ago and he mentioned there might be an opportunity to return.

He kept his cards close to his chest, he didn’t tell me who he was talking to or what he was planning to do, but when I saw the news earlier this week I was pleased.

It’s good for our competition to have him back, and I’m chuffed for him, too, because he didn’t play as much as he wanted in union.

When his signing was confirmed, I sent him a text and said, ‘It’s about time’.

Before he left he was one of the best wingers in the league and he probably wouldn’t have been far off the England squad.

I’m sure he’ll be hoping to get back up to that level and put his name in the mix.

He’s gone to a good club in Warrington, who we face next at the Magic Weekend in May.

It will be strange playing against him – more for him, I imagine, given how many close friends he still has here.

But I’m looking forward to seeing how he goes and I do think his arrival will give Warrington a boost.

He made his debut in the same year I broke through into the side – we both made the England team, too – and so I’ve seen him develop as a player.

You only have to watch his highlights to see how fast he is and how good his try-scoring ability is. But some people might not realise just how strong he is, he causes a lot of damage with his early carries and I think he’ll be a big asset for Warrington.

Huddersfield visit the DW Stadium tomorrow for the first of four games in the two weeks sandwiching Easter.

I saw their game last week against Hull KR, but I’ll not take too much from that because I think they’ll say themselves that they under-performed.

The Giants have a lot of individuals who can cause teams trouble.

In the middle, Sebastine Ikahihifo and Ukuma Ta’ai cause quite a bit of damage, we all know how good Danny Brough’s kicking game can be, and in Jermaine McGillvary they have one of the best wingers in the world.

If they turn up, they have the ability to hurt us and it’s for us to make sure we’re on our game.

We’ve obviously had a long time to prepare for this after our game at Castleford was postponed last Sunday because of the weather.

I’d seen the footage from the Wakefield game against Widnes the night before – which was abandoned during the first-half – and thought it would be a doubt.

I was sat at home, ready to leave, when I got the text to say it was off.

The first thing some of lads said was, ‘What a waste of a Saturday night!’

Obviously we’d prepared as if the game was going to go ahead.

I’m not sure the staff felt that way, it would have been better to play the game rather than try and catch-up later in the season.
