Wane sweating over Farrell's fitness

Wigan secured a dramatic 13-12 victory against Warrington to tighten their grip on second-spot in the table - but were left sweating on an injury to Liam Farrell.

The forward left the action early in the first-half clutching his shoulder and last night went to hospital for scans.

Shaun Wane said: “He’s in pain. He looks paler than normal which means he’s in pain - for him to say, ‘it’s sore’, it must be really sore because he wouldn’t admit that. We’ll see how it is.”

In his place, Liam Paisley played a bigger role than expected and fellow young players Callum Field, Gabe Hamlin and Josh Woods made telling contributions.

The score was level 12-12, following Josh Charnley’s late try, when halfback Woods kept his cool to slot the decisive drop-goal.

“I’m a big Warrington fan, it’s a champion club but I thought we deserved it,” said Wane. “We were busted before the game started and then we lost Faz, and Tony Clubb for a long period, but we dug in.

“I thought Gabe did some good things and or players like Cal and Liam, it will be good for them, and for Josh to get the drop-goal at the end.

“He’s a cool player, Josh. He’s laid-back - which frustrates me sometimes - but he’s skilful and he’s done some good things. He’s a good kid.”

Wane said captain Sean O’Loughlin (calf), Dan Sarginson (knee) and Romain Navarrete (suspension) should be available for next Thursday’s trip to Huddersfield.

Wire coach Steve Price saw his side out-score Wigan three tries to two, but praised the hosts for a “courageous” performance.
