Wigan Warriors boss confirms Jai Field injury blow as Tiaki Chan's loan future addressed

Wigan Warriors head coach Matt Peet has confirmed that Jai Field is set for a spell on the sidelines following a fresh hamstring injury.

The full-back has been omitted from Wigan’s 21-man squad for Friday’s clash against Castleford Tigers, replaced by Jack Farrimond in the only change made ahead of Round 14.

Peet has revealed that the 26-year-old suffered the blow in the early exchanges of Saturday’s Challenge Cup Final at Wembley, but battled through the pain barrier as the Warriors claimed an 18-8 victory over Warrington Wolves.

Jai Field has pulled his hamstring, he pulled it very early in that game (Challenge Cup Final),” Peet confirmed.

“We were aware of it, and we know just how brave he played during that game.

“He’s had a scan, and we await some different opinions on it.

"He’s going to be out for a few weeks at least.”

It’s a huge blow for the Warriors, but Peet insists that his squad has several replacements ready to fill in across the spine, with Field having previously been rested this season to date to manage a slight muscle problem.

“The obvious ones are Ryan Hampshire, Bevan French and Zach Eckersley,” the 40-year-old head coach continued.

“We’ve got Jack Farrimond who can play in the halves, Ryan Hampshire who can play in the halves, Kruise Leeming who can play in the halves.

“When Adam Keighran is back from suspension, he can also play in the halves.”

Meanwhile, Tiaki Chan - who travelled to the capital with the squad and watched on as the side claimed a record-extending 21st Cup triumph - remains on loan at Hull FC for the foreseeable future.

The France international has spent the last month at the MKM Stadium and has impressed, with Hull Daily Mail reporting that the Black and Whites are keen on retaining the 23-year-old for the rest of the Super League campaign.

But Peet insists no conversations regarding a longer-term deal have been discussed as of yet.

“We haven’t spoken about the remainder of the season, we’re very much approaching it on a week-to-week basis,” Peet said.

“For the time being, we feel it’s the right place for Tiaki.

"He’s loving it there and Hull are happy with him, but there’s been no commitment about anything longer term.”
