The 18-year-old prop has come through the club’s famed scholarship and academy system and was one of 10 youngsters handed a senior debut when head coach Matt Peet heavily rotated his side for last month’s Super League clash against Hull KR.

Although the youthful Warriors suffered a 62-4 defeat at Sewell Group Craven Park, it was a night O’Connor will never forget as years of hard work finally paid off.

The highly-rated front-rower, who was named Wigan’s Academy Player of the Year in 2025, traced his rugby league journey back to his early days at local community club Orrell St James.

“I started at Orrell St James when I was four years old,” O’Connor told Wigan Today.

“I played there and just fell in love with the game, and I played there all the way through, and then I joined Wigan’s scholarship when I was 14, and then signed for the academy when I was 16.”

Having grown up supporting the Warriors, making his Super League debut was a special moment, even if it came with plenty of nerves.

“I was definitely nervous,” he smiled.

“There were a lot of nerves, but it’s what I’ve been working towards my whole life, and I was buzzing to get the opportunity, and I thought we all ripped in when we got on, so yeah, I was buzzing.”

More than 10,000 supporters were inside Sewell Group Craven Park that evening, but O’Connor says sharing the occasion with players he has progressed through the ranks with made it even more memorable.

“It felt even better because I’ve played with those lads coming through, so for so many of us to make our debut together, it was special and I loved every minute of it,” he added.

Like many young players stepping up to Super League level, O’Connor quickly noticed the increase in intensity as he entered the action from the bench.

“It’s definitely a lot faster,” he said. “Obviously bigger bodies as well, but I think it was just the speed of it - that needs some getting used to, but it’s what we are working towards.”

The teenager also paid tribute to his family, who have supported him throughout his development since being a nipper.

“My family have supported me the whole way through, especially my grandma and my grandad – they are big Wigan supporters, so they were buzzing when I got to make my debut the other week.

“My grandma comes to most of my games. Sometimes not if we are away, she doesn’t drive, but if she can get there, she’ll be there!”

O’Connor believes Wigan’s culture has helped ease the transition from academy and reserves rugby into the senior setup, with the club’s young players occasionally invited to train with the first-team.

“It’s brilliant,” he said. “You don’t feel uncomfortable at all, you might be a bit nervous when you get the first few sessions in, but all the boys get around you and it’s a good environment to be in, and you thrive in environments like that, so we’re just fortunate that Wigan give you the chance to go and train with the first-team.”

Looking ahead, O’Connor’s focus is on helping Wigan’s academy and reserves turn an unbeaten campaign into silverware.

“I definitely want to win something with the academy and reserves this year,” he said.

“We had a bit of disappointment last year, but we’ve been working hard in this pre-season, and we’ve not lost a game so far yet this year, so hopefully we can win something.”
